Section 79: The Political Journey of Dato Thong Hiang Kim

Dato Thong Hiang Kim s father, Thong Yew Ming(唐裕明), established the "Tong Seng Company"（同成公司） on Bahau Street, which became highly popular within the local Chinese community. It was a prominent supplier of Western goods and food items (known as "yang pun"(洋判)) before World War II. The company also operated a petrol station for the convenience of the people. Additionally, they established a theater called the "Happy Theatre."（快乐戏院） The brothers, due to their individual careers, hired a manager to oversee the business operations of the Tong Seng Company.

Dato Thong Hiang Kim served the citizens by setting up a counter inside the store. Despite the deep gratitude of the citizens, he steadfastly refused any form of repayment or recognition.

Dato Thong Hiang Kim was elected as a Malayan Chinese Association (MCA) state assemblyman five times consecutively, serving three terms as a state assemblyman and two terms as a state executive councillor. He was also the first-ever state assemblyman and state executive councillor for Bahau.

Dato Thong Hiang Kim showcased his unwavering dedication on the political stage and fulfilled his promises to the constituents. With a pragmatic approach, he advocated for the welfare of the Chinese community, promoted educational development, stimulated economic growth, and championed social justice. His political achievements not only translated into votes but also deeply impacted the community he represented.

However, at the pinnacle of his political career, Dato Thong Hiang Kim made a remarkable decision. Despite wielding significant influence and prestige on the political stage, upon retirement, he did not succumb to the allure of power and fame. Despite being offered a royal grant of 3 acres of land located on Bukit Royal in Seremban, he staunchly declined. This unassuming approach reflected his inner strength and profound understanding of the true values of life.

Dato Thong Hiang Kim had four sons and three daughters. After retirement, he chose a tranquil and fulfilling lifestyle, leading a modest life that earned him immense respect.

Dato Thong Hiang Kim : Commemorating a Selfless Community Hero Dato Thong Hiang Kim ‘s life was marked by dedication and selflessness. To permanently honor his significant contributions, the city council decided to name an important road after him, expressing their respect and gratitude for his legacy.
