Section 50: Hainan Village
"In the Bahau area, there are not many Hainanese people, and they are scattered in several nearby new villages. With the cooperation of the Foo family, they built a small Hainanese village in the town of Bahau, with about ten Hainanese families living there. Due to the advantageous geographical location of Hainan Village, it is only a stone's throw away from the market, and the theater and food stalls can be reached within a two-minute walk, making life very convenient. Some people who come here to work are also willing to rent houses in Hainan Village. However, in the days before the development of properties, the houses in Hainan Village were in high demand, and there would usually be seven or eight people squeezed into one room. Lutian Yuan Coffee Shop(禄天园咖啡店) also had seven or eight rooms for family living. Other ethnic compatriots who lived in Hainan Village would start speaking Hainanese when they came into contact.
As time moved into the late 1980s, the Bahau city area underwent various developments, including the construction of new markets, double-storey shophouses, and hawker centers. Some areas of Hainan Village were also within the development zone, so some residential houses were demolished. With the development of properties, most of the residents of Hainan Village moved away, and the Hainanese atmosphere gradually faded. Now, only the Chen Anshan(陈安山) family remains in Hainan Village."
