Origin of the Name Jempol - Folklore

The origin of the name Jempol is a district in Negeri Sembilan with its capital in Bahau. Before being named Jempol, this area was called Leban Condong or Danau Rasau. According to the story, Leban Condong was named after a man who was the first to settle in this area. Meanwhile, Danau Rasau was the name of Leban Condong's wife, who originated from Minangkabau. Later, the local community replaced the name of this district with Jempol.

Origin of the Name Jempol - Folklore Once upon a time, in a district in the state of Negeri Sembilan, there lived a religious leader named Leban Condong, who married a beautiful woman named Danau Rasau from the Minangkabau region in West Sumatra. After a year of marriage, they were blessed with a son named Jempol, who was nurtured and raised with love and affection.

After growing up, Jempol became a handsome and brave young man. Leban Condong hoped that Jempol would become a Mighty Warrior when he saw the strength and bravery of his son. So, Leban Condong sent Jempol to a famous Martial Arts School in another region to learn self-defense skills.

After several years of learning martial arts, Jempol returned to his hometown. Now, he had become a skilled warrior. Many warriors tested his skills, but no one could match him. He became renowned as a powerful and respected warrior, and no one dared to challenge him. However, due to his arrogance, Jempol was disliked by the villagers.

In the village, there was a beautiful and kind-hearted girl named Melur. Every young man who laid eyes on her was smitten, including Jempol. He yearned to marry Melur. Thus, Jempol, accompanied by his parents, approached Melur's family to propose, believing that they would accept. Unfortunately, they rejected the proposal because they were well aware of Jempol's arrogant nature. Jempol couldn't accept this rejection and felt angry and hurt. As a result, he harbored resentment towards Melur's family.

Li's father and son

The next day, Melur went to the paddy field to help her parents. Jempol had been restraining Melur and threatening her. Melur had told Jempol that he was not a good man to be her husband, which made Jempol angry and intend to harm Melur out of revenge. Melur tried to escape from Jempol but was powerless and eventually gave up. Jempol raped Melur despite her pleas for forgiveness. Melur kept Jempol's act a secret from her parents. However, her parents urged Melur to tell the truth. Eventually, Melur revealed the real situation. However, her parents couldn't do anything as they didn't want to take any risks.

Three months later, Melur's pregnant belly became visible, causing the villagers to wonder who the father of Melur's child was. Eventually, the secret was uncovered. Unable to bear the shame, Melur took her own life by jumping into a river. Jempol knew about the incident but showed no remorse. Instead, he became worse, preying on many other young girls.

Bahau’s famous Ya Mei Laksa Noodles can be traced back to 1950. At that time, Yamei's father carried a load and sold this delicious La Lak noodles in the streets and alleys.

Therefore, the villagers discussed and decided to eliminate the cursed Jempol to put an end to his wicked deeds. As Jempol possessed mystical powers, the villagers had to think of a suitable way to eradicate him. They agreed to install sharp bamboo stakes at the bottom of the river where Jempol would swim and bathe.

The following morning, when Jempol leaped into the river, he was impaled by the sharp bamboo stakes. The river water turned red, mixed with Jempol's blood. When his body was brought to the riverbank, Jempol was lifeless, his body still bleeding. It was said that this was the reason why the soil in Jempol's area turned red, stained by his blood.

Afterward, the village returned to peace. Jempol's parents left the village, unable to bear the shame. To commemorate the event, the local residents renamed the village "Jempol Village." Today, Jempol has become a thriving settlement with inhabitants who are no longer afraid to pass through the area of Jempol's grave. In fact, not far from the grave, a mosque named "Terentang Congregation Mosque" was built in remembrance of the incident.

Jempol Landmark

There is a noodle making shop in Kampong Indah that has a history of 115 years. As early as 1908, Lee Kyung-hyo's great-grandfather started making noodles himself. This traditional skill has been carefully passed down and carried forward by four generations. Lee Youming mentioned that his grandfather came here from southern China to make a living when he was a teenager and brought this noodle-making skill. At that time, the production of noodles was completely dependent on manual labor, and the output was limited.Later, when his father took over the business, mechanized production began to be introduced.
