Section 65: Selangor and KL (Bahau) Chi Wen Alumni Association
Since its inception with the first president, Sam Chin Yan (沈钧远), the association has seen several presidents, including Yap Chin Hoe, Lim Kien Ann ,Lee Choon Chet, Cheong Sam Hong, Yiaw Chin Tang (叶清河、林建安、李俊洁、张心康、饶进棠), and the current president, Ho Mui Moi (何玫䓺).
In 1996, the alumni association actively expanded its activities and also engaged in social welfare work. This included donations to orphanages and raising tens of thousands of ringgit for medical funds for underprivileged children. During the same year, the association established scholarships for children of members with excellent academic achievements, which has been awarded annually without interruption ever since.
Throughout the various terms of the committee members, besides fulfilling their roles and organizing various activities, the most significant achievement has been the relentless pursuit of a "home" in the Klang Valley region. After years of effort, the association finally succeeded in purchasing a two-story shop-house for its headquarters on Jalan Kuchai Lama, Kuala Lumpur, in December 2005. The following year, the association held the grand opening ceremony of its new headquarters and celebrated its 12th anniversary at the Tianhou Temple in Kuala Lumpur. The Selangor and Kuala Lumpur (Bahau) Chi Wen Alumni Association members witnessed this historic moment together!
Caring for their alma mater and giving back to their alma mater have been central to the alumni association's work and responsibilities. Over the past 20 years, the association has organized numerous activities such as book fairs, alumni homecoming days, and educational guidance seminars. The association has also rallied alumni in the Klang Valley area to raise RM 40,000 to support the construction of a science laboratory at Chi Wen Secondary School. The association has awarded scholarships to underprivileged students at the primary school affiliated with their alma mater and sponsored funds for maintenance and improvement of basic facilities. Additionally, the association has allocated funds each year to support the Chinese Language association and school publications at their alma mater's secondary school, contributing to the publication of literary collections and the school magazine.
In the early 1970s, the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur (Bahau) Chi Wen Alumni Association was established. Several classmates, including Deng Xing Pin, Lim Boon Pin and Kwa Kim Teck(邓兴彬、林文彬、柯金德)took turns serving as its president. However, the association ceased its activities for a period. It wasn't until 1992, when a group of enthusiastic alumni led by Sam Chin Yan, Choo Chen Fah, Pook Ah Lek, Lim Soo Hee, Lim Kien Ann, Hew Ching Puah (沈钧远、朱镇华、卜亚烈、林树禧、林建安、丘进保), and others, jointly organized the "First Chi Wen Carnival." The event took place at the Golden Palm Resort in Port Dickson. Over 300 attendees, including alumni, teachers, and members of the school's board of directors, participated in the event.
Under the leadership of Sam Chin Yan and Choo Chen Fah, the organizing committee submitted an application to the Registrar of Societies to establish the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur (Bahau) Chi Wen Alumni Association. With Shen's dedicated efforts, the association was successfully re-registered on April 18, 1994. Shen Junyuan assumed the role of the first chairman of the inaugural board of directors. In October 1994, the first board of directors worked together to host the "Second Chi Wen Carnival," which was held at Genting Highlands and attracted around 400 participants, including alumni from Bahau and Singapore, as well as committed board members.
